About NeoVista, Inc.
FAQs
What is NeoVista?
NeoVista is a development-stage medical device company currently involved in validating an innovative therapy for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), using proprietary technology for the delivery of epimacular beta radiation directly to the area of disease in the back of the eye.
Where is NeoVista located?
Since 2005, our global headquarters have been at 38875 Cherry St., Newark, CA 94560, USA.
When was NeoVista founded?
NeoVista was founded by The Innovation Factory in 2002. This entrepreneurial company seeks out early-stage medical technologies from individual inventors, academic institutions, and corporations, and provides a comprehensive framework for development. The Innovation Factory manages the complex path to market for these products—from proof of concept through FDA approval—and is revolutionizing the ways in which medical technology is introduced.
What is wet AMD?
Wet AMD is a leading cause of blindness in men and women over the age of 50. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels begin to grow underneath the retina. These new blood vessels may leak fluid or blood, thereby blurring or distorting central vision. The longer these abnormal vessels leak or grow, the more vision will be lost. Because the condition often progresses rapidly, the earlier wet AMD is diagnosed, the better the chance of preserving some or much of the patient’s central vision.
Why is it important to develop new treatments?
At present there is no cure for wet AMD, and the current standard of care requires patients to receive regular intraocular injections of medications that work against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Although effective, this treatment places a burden on patients, physicians, and the healthcare system; it is important that other treatments be explored that may reduce these burdens.
What is the promise of NeoVista?
NeoVista technology has the potential to change the way that patients are treated for wet AMD. The one-time procedure could have a significant impact on the cost of care, reducing not only the need for ongoing injections of anti-VEGF medications but also the need for time-consuming office visits. Furthermore, the unique NeoVista beta radiation delivery system may have additional applications in other indications (such as eye tumors); ongoing research will show its true potential in a range of conditions.
What is the NeoVista treatment?
The NeoVista treatment delivers a highly targeted dose of beta radiation to the AMD lesion on the retina. This epimacular beta radiation therapy is delivered during a vitrectomy, a common surgical procedure, and has little effect on surrounding tissues within the eye. Given with two concomitant injections of Lucentis (one at the time of surgery and one about one month later), this investigational treatment has shown promise in clinical studies.
