The company also gained FDA approval for Macugen, a drug to treat macular degeneration, and partnered with Pfizer to market Macugen in a deal valued at over $750 million. This product achieved net sales of $184 million in its launch year, in the top 8 percent of all recorded pharmaceutical launches. OSI Pharmaceuticals subsequently acquired Eyetech for $935 million.
Prior to founding Eyetech, David was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the NYU School of Medicine.
